A Sumerian, and later Babylonian, city lying in the lowlands between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers in southern Mesopotamia, about 125 miles (200 km) southeast of modern Baghdad. Isin (modern Ishan Bahriyat) was inhabited at least from the fifth millennium b.c., but it did not rise to prominence until the fall of the Third Dynasty of Ur, at the close of the third millennium b.c. The first dynasty of Isin was founded circa 2017 B.c.byaruler named Ishbi-Erra. The city was most famous for its cult center and temple dedicated to Gula (or Ninisina), goddess of healing, which occupied the highest point in Isin. Mesopotamians came there from far and wide in hopes of achieving some sort of miraculous cure. Meanwhile, during the first two centuries of the second millennium b.c., Isin engaged in a lively and sometimes warlike rivalry with the neighboring city of Larsa, until both were captured by Babylonia's King Hammurabi and absorbed into his empire. Eventually the marshes reclaimed the site of Isin, and the locals came to call it Ishan Bahr-iyat, the "Monument Drowned by the Sea."
